Facts about disabilities to raise awareness :
According to the World Health Organization , 15% of the people in the world are affected by a disability. That means that over 1 billion people in the world are living with a form of disability, including 720 million adults and 93 million children. People with disabilities are one of the most excluded groups in our society. Disability can be between individuals with a health condition such as cerebral palsy, down syndrome and depression.
People with disability experience poorer health outcomes, have less access to education and work opportunities, and are more likely to live in poverty than those without a disability. Very often people with disability do not receive the healthcare services they need. Evidence shows that half of people with disability cannot afford healthcare. People with disability are also more than twice as likely to find healthcare providers' skills inadequate.
So here's what we can do:
It's important to invest in programs for people with disabilities and to make sure that disabilities is actually included in governments' public health agendas. We can increase awareness of the public at large of the importance of the issue of disability. We can develop knowledge base with a view to promoting and protecting the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities and ensure their full inclusion in society, particularly by encouraging training and protecting employment.
